Seeing this reminds me of when I was a kid, because the Rubik's Cube was all the rage back in the eighties. It seemed like everyone was playing with one of those foolish things. I get a fair amount of smug satisfaction out of the fact that I was one of the few who figured out a method for solving it without resorting to reading a cheat-sheet.

"I can solve it faster than you!"

"Yes, but did you figure out how to do it on your own?"

That seemed to end the discussion right there!

The creation of the Rubik's Cube spawned a whole line of puzzle toys along a similar vein - the one I remember best was a pyramid. None of the other toys that were created subsequently were as durable or as interesting as the cube.

And now there is renewed interest again; every once in awhile the Rubik's Cube shows up on TV or in a movie, and suddenly everyone needs one again.

I don't remember when I first read this book, but I do remember being intrigued by the clever way in which the author explained in a simple way some very complicated subjects.

The premise is this: a man who lives in a two dimensional world (he is a square) recieves a visit from a three dimensional being, and then has the privilege of visiting "spaceland" himself.

The author then uses the square's confusion and learning about dimensions as a way of getting us to consider the possibility of more than three dimensions.

Thrown into the mix is a lot of social commentary. Abbott has his tongue very firmly in his cheek as he talks about women being one dimensional beings in a two dimensional world, and also as he talks about the social climbing of one generation to the next as they add more angles.
